Anfractuous & Nyctophobic

For online entry and full details see The AAAnfractuous 200km      The Less Anfractuous 200km       The Nyctophobic 100km

This is the 11th year of the Anfractuous, a great 200km route from Chalfont St Peter which heads out west through Hilly Chilterns and around the rolling Newbury Downs. In fact there are now not one but two Anfractuous routes for your delight, the AAAnfractuous which visits some great Chiltern Hills for those chasing Audax Altitude Award & Grimpeurs de Sud badges, and for those who of a more wobbly legged disposition, the Less Anfractuous, which offers an equally enjoyable albeit slightly less strenuous day out (and enables us to to pose the questn - are you riding the Anfractuous or are you a Lesser rider?.

The Less Anfractous uses a subset of AAAnfractous controls, so if you’re not sure which to ride, opt for the Less Anfractuous; if you're feeling game you can always ride the hills on the day. But the Less Anfractous is still a challenging ride, taking in the long climb to Christmas Common from Marlow, then Streatley Hill, the Boxford Alps, the Lambourn Downs and Harvest Hill with your goatfooted friends, and as you gasp for breath you’ll be glad you forwent the delights of Abby Barn Lane, Fawley Bottom and Colstrope lane.
The routes features several lanes which can be pretty mucky in bad weather so its sensible to use mudguards if you have them, and only the fastest will be home before dusk so bering your lights.
The route visits three fine Cafes where you will collect a sticker for your Brevet card at the counter.and some info controls (so bring a pen). If teh Cafe's are busy or you’d rather make a supermarket sweep, that’s fine, just bring home receipts as proof of passage. The control cafes are:
  • Benson - The Waterfront café. On a sunny day it’s delightful to sit outside by the river with a coffee and cake. Here’s hoping!
  • Wantage-  Vale & Downland Museum café.  A small café run by volunteers in this attractive and interesting small museum.  If you don’t feel the need for a feed, please consider making a donation to museum funds. There is a bike shop just before the left turn into Church Street.
  • Pangbourne -  Costa Cafe (or “snack up” at the small Somerfields supermarket opposite .

The route goes through Marlow out and back where there are plenty of stores if you are running low on supplies - you'll pass a Sainsburys Local in the High Street on the return - and the there are also stores in Lambourn and Cookham.

This is also the 11th year of the Nyctophobic, an equally fine 100km route which follows the Less Anfractous route out to Benson and then heads back to Chalfont, picking up the Anractuous routes along the way. Its a fine sporting route in its own right and makes a great outing for those who don't have time for the longer routes.

Chalfont Saint Peter
Ride HQ is at the Chalfont St Peter Community Centre as usual. The local mainline station is at Gerrards Cross and its about 30 minute s by bike from stations at Slough, Amersham, Uxbridge and Ruislip, and yes, you can take your bike on the "underground" lines out of London.

If early starts are not your thing you are welcome to stay at the Community Centre on Friday evening on a “no mod cons” basis (bring a sleeping bag). There is plenty of room but do let us know if you are planning to stop over so we know how many to expect. We generally meet at the White Hart in Chalfont St Peter High Street for a night cap before heading back to the Centre to setup and get some sleep. There are washrooms but no showers though breakfast is provided. You can leave your bags with the organiser during the ride and store bikes inside overnight but do bring a lock in case you need to leave your bike unattended.

Riders arriving by car are requested to park in the car park in the village centre. See the rider notes/routesheet for detail.
