The Willy Warmer
This is the 11th edition of the legendary Willy Warmer 200km Audax from Chalfont St Peter which after much tweaking has settled down to become a no-nonsense 'ride round ride' on rolling roads for the "Randonneur Round the Year" brigade - and anybody else who is going stir crazy in the long cold dark days of January and wants to get back out on the road.
We set off with a fast run out to cafes in Pangbourne routing via Marlowe and Henley for elevenses, then on out across the Newbury Downs for lunch at the internationally renowned (steady...) Tutti Pole Cafe. Then round and back through Kintbury, Kingsclere and Risebury for a cafe stop or supermarket sweep in Winnersh, and then the final push for home past Maidenhead and the gradual climb back up to Chalfont. Easy!
Ride HQ is at the Chalfont St Peter Community Centre as usual. The local mainline station is at Gerrards Cross and its about 30 minutes by bike from stations at Slough, Amersham, Uxbridge and Ruislip (and yes, you can take your bike on the "underground" lines out of London).
If early starts are not your thing you are welcome to stay at the Community Centre on Friday evening on a “no mod cons” basis (bring a sleeping bag). There is plenty of room but do let us know your plans. We generally meet in one of the pubs in Chalfont St Peter for a night cap before heading back to the Centre to setup and get some sleep. There are washrooms but no showers though breakfast is provided. You can leave your bags with the organiser during the ride and store bikes inside overnight but do bring a lock in case you need to leave your bike unattended at any time.
Riders arriving by car are requested to park in the car park in the village centre. See the rider notes/routesheet for details.
For full details including routesheet, gps track and online entry see the AUK website.
